Tom Cruise vs. American Psychiatric Association

Water Sports

A while ago I posted about high school drop-out/actor Tom Cruise's recent Scientology-based ramblings. Well, it looks like the dipshit train isn't slowing any time soon.

Cruise recently met with Today Show's Matt Lauer where he went on a predictably silly and animated tirade against the psychiatry profession. The American Psychiatric Association responded to this and I thought it would be cool to put the pieces together to get a glimpse of what a discussion between the two would look like,

American Psychiatric Association: While the APA respects the right of individuals to express their own points of view, science has proven that mental illnesses are real medical conditions that affect millions of Americans.

Tom Cruise: I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.

American Psychiatric Association: Medications can be an important and even life-saving part of a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan. As in other areas of medicine, medications are a safe and effective way to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans who have mental health concerns.

Tom Cruise: Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that? They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs.

American Psychiatric Association: Mental health is a critical ingredient of overall health. It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy.

Tom Cruise: Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.

American Psychiatric Association: Over the past five years, the nation has more than doubled its investment in the study of the human brain and behavior.

Tom Cruise: There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance. I don't talk about things that I don't understand.

American Psychiatric Association: God, you are a fucking idiot.

Ok, so I made up the last line. Nonetheless, I would have to say APA: 1, Cruise: 0.

Better luck next time, douchebag.

Ritalin is NOT an antipsychotic drug. It is classified as a stimulant and if Tom had gone to college he would have know that by the students behavior at finals time.

I am afraid that the more the h.s dropout, mr. cruise speaks, the more uneducated he sounds. This most recent rant of his, meant only to further his career, will be his ultimate demise. Ritalin IS a stimulant. He apparently doesn't know the pharmacology behind the drug.

Tom Cruise is displaying highly inappropriate behavior. His comments are consistent with personality disorders seen, but not acknowledged, by many impaired people.
When we elevate entertainers to "star" status, we sometimes put them beyond reproach. However some entered their chosen line of work with issues made worse by publicity, papparazi and our hunger for gossip.
Who really cares about what Tom Cruise thinks, believes in or who he dates. He's no different than the goofy, blacksheep cousin that we all try to avoid at family gatherings.

maybe he can join Tommy Lee back to college, if he can get hes GED, that is....

Unfortunately Tom Cruise is extremely uninformed on the medical field in general, no education, no experience, just his indulgence in stardoom and scientology.

Thank GOD for Physcology and medications that are available today.

My thanks goes out to the medical profession and their major accomplishments.

I hope Cruise never has to endure any phsyciatric problems because if he refuses medication he live will only go down hill.

I think tiny, aging Tom Cruise is just trying to deflect from the fact that he is tiny and aging by speaking out and acting in the manor that he has. I don't think he will head toward the "final" curtain with the grace and popularity of a Paul Newman.

Tom Cruise has obviously never had a good friend or known someone with bi polar disorder or a serious chemical imbalance. Even with the best diet, exercise, and best possible surroundings they still need meds. My best friend is in good shape, eats right, TAKES VITAMINS, and still needs his meds. If he doesn't get them he could do alot of harm to himself or someone else. Maybe I should have him miss his doctors apointment and send him to Mr. Cruises house for the day!

if Mr.Cruise is able to get the youngster he plans to marry pregnant and have a natural child of his own, he may find himself in a position to truly judge what happens to a woman chemically during pregnancy, child birth, and there after.

I agree there is overuse and misuse of many medications, and any of us may make the personal decision not to use psychiatric medications, but I don't think it is for any of us to judge the choices anyone else makes when they are in the depths of despair.

I for one am sick and tired of celebrities who only use their power and visibility to tear others down (this means you, Mel!)...instead of using it to better the world in an intelligent way.

Isn't it sad that a person with so little education and practical knowledge, as Tom Cruise can create such a furor over something he knows absolutely nothing about... His behavior has become MANIC, and possibly he needs help other than from Scientologists.. Where does he get the nerve to think he knows it all... Is it ego? Is it celebrity? Is it manic? He really should learn, if nothing else, to keep his big mouth shut... just smile... and have no opinions - then we will go see his films.

At 7:41 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

When my husband had his one and only manic episode I thanked God for the person who created a drug that made him think clearly and made him see reason. He is not on drugs now but if we could't get him down from that very dangerous high to see himself, he could have very seriously hurt himself or someone else. Tom, you are on a chemical high right now. The high is created by your brain which trigger natural chemicals in your body. Sometimes a person's triggers don't work all that well and they need adjustments. Try to understand that it's possible that you are wrong.

While Cruise seems out of control with his irresponsible...and possibly damaging statements about brain chemistry and psychiatry...and his recent publicity blitz, the psychiatry/psychology professions AND the pharmaceutical houses also bear a responsibility to carefully prescribe any medications. Some of the major drawbacks to any mind altering prescription medication are over-prescribing, using the drugs for purposes other than for what is was developed, marketing, and extended use. There is a vast amount of antecdotal evidence about the debilitating and long lasting effects of taking antidepressants for long periods of time and/or weaning off of them.
This whole issue is complex and multi-layered and there is not one solution. But a first course of action as a consumer of any prescription medications is to get the facts straight and to get the facts from multiple sources. "User beware."

I am over Tom Cruise and his pompous behaviour.

He is condescending and has a superiority complex, not in the least humble.

How many times in the interview with Matt Lauer, did he use Matt's name?

Now, more than ever, I am convinced that Nicole Kidman is so much better off with him.

Those of us who have spent our careers helping and treating people with severe and persistent mental health problems know that Mr. Cruise's ramblings are just that: Ramblings of a misinformed, uneducated, and arrogant individual.

Science has shown that chemicals in the brain can and do become imbalanced for a variety of reasons and that mere "exercise and vitamins" are not sufficient to reduce the symptomology of many mental illnesses.

Mr. Cruise has NOT researched the history of psychiatry (or psychology for that matter). He, has, instead chosen to take as fact the ramblings/personal opinions of a man who can best be classified as a charismatic cult leader. (Manson, Koresh, and others spring to mind.)

Mr. Cruise should spend his time doing what he is paid to do: Act and promote his movies and leave the treatment and dialogue regarding mental health disorders to those who are TRAINED to treat and speak to them.

I will never see a TOM CRUISE film ever again. MY BEST TO HIS CHILDREN.

I hope everyone bans seeing that stupid thing u call a movie, lets see how u will deal with depression then, maybe a new wife?

Mr. Cruise's comments were totally inappropriate. Whoever said "walk a mile in my shoes" and "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" had some of the answers. Maybe Tom Cruise should keep his opinions to himself,or least not broadcast them on national TV. He has just shown the viewers how small minded he is, and should do some research before he regurgitates someone elses thoughts on the general public.

A friend of mine just got back from LA and heard this scoop about Tom
& Katie from someone who works at Universal. The source said that they
(Tom & Katie) have a 5-year contract and he's paying her $8 million.
The engagement happened so fast because Rob Thomas' (Matchbox 20) wife
caught Rob and and Tom in bed together and they rushed the engagement so
that it would overshadow that scandal. Obv., take it with a grain of
salt.

Read below. This was just published.

Independent Sources

Bureaucrats?Independent Sources Confirms Existence of Tom Cruise/Rob
Thomas Rumor Independent Sources announced today that it has uncovered a
new, previously undiscovered Tom Cruise rumor:

Tom Cruise and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas are lovers!

Independent Sources has hesitated writing about Tom Cruise/Katie
Holmes for many reasons. First, there are other things going on in the
world that, believe it or not, rank higher on the importance scale.
Second, pretty much everything that can be said is being said.

However, someone (I'll call her Mistress of the Hollywood Rumor) just
walked into Insider's office with the following dish that I feel
compelled to pass on. I did a quick check of Technorati and it wasn't
there. So even if it is not true, it is at least original.

No doubt that anyone with an Internet connection has read about Tom
Cruise being gay. According to rumor lore, he has had a long-time
boyfriend in Chicago who is an Asian pilot for American Airlines. This
is an accusation that Cruise and more importantly Cruise's many
attorneys vehemently deny.

There have been many stories that supposedly corroborate his
sexuality

but never a smoking gun. Rumor mongers attribute this to the fact that
Cruise goes to great lengths to cover his tracks. We are told that
everyone around him signs extensive confidentiality contracts with
enormous penalties for indiscretion. (Exhibit A: the 8-page
confidentiality contract Cruise's housekeeper was forced to sign).

Such stories have been around for years and Cruise has evidently
attempted to counter them with a series of high-profile heteronormative
relationships. First, Nicole Kidman, then Penelope Cruz, and most
recently Katie Holmes. In each instance, the "relationship" is actually
a contract that gives the women a boost to their careers, a lot of
money, and an elegant lifestyle.

Here is where this particular rumor gets interesting. Not long ago,
Marisol, the wife of Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas (who has had to
contend with his own rumors of bi-sexuality) found her husband in bed
with Tom Cruise causing Cruise's people to shift into high gear.

First, Mrs. Rob Thomas was bought off for an undetermined sum.
Second,

Cruise and his handlers set out to immediately find Cruise a girlfriend.
Second-tier actresses were targeted. A list was drawn up with Jessica
Alba (#1 pick) and three other girls who fell out for various reasons.
Originally targeted (#3 I think) but later rejected as "undesirable" was
rumor queen Lindsay Lohan. Way down at #5 on the list was Katie Holmes,
but that was the one with whom they were able to strike a deal.

Once the contact was signed, photo ops were set up, leaks were made
to

the right places, and we've had celebrity relationship on steroids ever
since.

One thing I will credit this rumor for is how it nicely explains
Tom's

behavior this past few months-including the couch jumping episode on
Oprah. Cruise simply didn't have time for the Holmes rumors to circulate
at its normal speed and he couldn't allow it to be second page news
while the tabloids focused on Brad, Jennifer and Angelina.
No, this relationship had to immediately become the "it" topic.

Well, that's how we hear it.

[A reminder to those of you reading this who have trouble
differentiating truth from unsubstantiated rumor: at this point this is
all conjecture. All we are doing is confirming the existence of a rumor
that the Mistress tells us is all over Hollywood.] We should also add
that this story is a bit of a departure for us. If you are interested in
keeping up to date on it and other celebrity gossip, we suggest Defamer.

Tom Cruise is a perfect example of one who might benefit from therapy. After so many failed relationships, stupid comments about the lives of others, and and his own ridiculous beliefs, he needs to spend a little time removing his foot from his mouth.

He's an idiot! The more he talks the more he shows his utter stupidity. It's just a shame that "we" give him a public forum.

He's not really going to marry KH. Her parents will probably step in and read her the "riot act" about Tom, his "religion", his immaturity and anything else thats on their mind about this wacko of a guy.

He's just a bad actor, how believes that alien are living in Earth's volcanoes (re: Scientology).

For his comment that " that there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance". Can I tell something Mr Short Cruise. My brother in law died due to a chemical imbalance. My eldest son has ADHD due to a chemical imbalance. Who gives you the right to say that postpartum depression is not real and that prescribed drugs can not help the problem.
When you, Mr Short Cruise, get pregnant and have a child then lets talk.

Judging by the insane way Tom Cruise has been acting at recent red carpet events and on Oprah's couch I think he would benefit from some therapy and a psychiatric medications.

Futhermore, there is a reason this man has been married and divorced twice. I hope Katie Holmes has some older, wiser women in her life that will advise her to slow down this freak show of a "relationship" and GET TO KNOW this man she thinks she is in love with. All he is doing is dragging her into his insanity.

At 8:01 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe th at Mr. Cruise does not beleieve because he himself is need of some type of psychiatric help. You can see how Nicole is now able to show her true self. He is not humble by any means. When he realizes that it is him and not everyone else, he may be all alone. He has is the type of person that has some type of ethical values, but at the same times feels like individuals cause all of there own troubles. Just because he himself has not experienced things then he has no pity on anyone else. I am really glad that Nicole Kidman is out of that situation.

At 8:02 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tom Cruise's comments are based on Scientology. Scientologist believe that psychiatric conditions are caused by engrams. While I believe that Mr. Cruise has a right to believe whatever he wants in this country, I don't believe he has the right to chastise others for theirs. If he wants to educate others on his beliefs I think he could have chosen a better venue. To be mad at Tom Cruise would be like being angry at a monkey for eating grubs. I suggest that perhaps Mr. Cruise is at a crossroads in his life and he is attempting to create a legacy for himself before his celebrity is gone. Being known as a cradle robber isn't much of a legacy.

On a separate note, I don't understand how Scientology can be considered a religion anymore then Alcoholics Anonymous can. How does clearing engrams for a price constitute a religion?

At 8:06 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, really people! What do you expect?? Tom Cruise has given his brain over to a 'religion' founded by a SCIENCE FICTION writer!!! So give him a break, he is after all functioning on less brain pwer than your average kindergartener!

I was a huge Tom Crusie fan, I am not anymore! Everyone has a right to their own opinion, even if it is wrong. Tom crossed the line when he acted as if he is a professional with a medical degree. He is lucky he is blessed with wealth, good looks, and health, and never knowing what it is like to be depressed. He has also never had a baby. The eleavated homones in the body is REAL, IT IS A FACT. I will not see any more of his films. I think we should all take a stand against him and boycott his movies. I am so sick of Celebs pretending that they have somthing important to say. Tom, please shut up!

At 8:07 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We should all just hope that Cruise goes to live with the aliens that he "knows" exist...to another planet...right, Tom?...who knows, could he be one? If I was related to him, gosh, I would need therapy just for being related to this clearly confused person. He is clearly desperate! Thank God Nicole got out when she did. And Tom, this so called "Scientology" is such a joke...and yes, I've studied it...thoroughly. Wake up!

At 8:08 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, some things, especially those you know nothing about, shouldn't be broadcast..especially on live TELEVISION! But, although I admit to knowing very little, nor wanting to know anything about, Scientology, it will still NOT stop me from yelling "CULT" at the little "Hubbards" everytime I walk by their "recruiting" grounds..like the one on Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, Ca. Go Brooke!

I think Tom Cruise is corrrect. He has brought valuable information to the disscussion table. I applaud him for it!!!!
I believe we are a nation of over drugged, over weight, lazy people looking for a pill to fix all our problems.
We have the Pharmaceutical companies selling thier drugs to us on televesion. WE are suppose to tell our doctors to precribe for us medications, based on a commercial diagnosis. We are over saturated with drug use (leagal and illeagal).
ADD and ADHD is over prescribed and has become a tool for the teachers and parents of America to control children, becuase they are unwilling and unable to!

I loved Lewis Black's response:

If this behavior does not indicate a manic episode almost certainly the result of a chemical imbalance, I don't know what does!

People who speak in ignorance usually get bitten in the rear by the very words they speak. Mr. Cruise in no exception to the rule. The verbal flow of stupidity that is coming out of his jabbering mouth is making it's way back to bite him on the ass as we type our responces to it. So let him keep talking. He's only hurting himself.

With so many issues going on here he makes it easy for overlapping and counter-attacks.

1) Tom Cruise's (alleged) bisexual escapades, 2) the new movie (premieres do look good), Cruise's past relationships/contracts, 3) the new relationship, 4)drugs vs natural remedies.

I have to agree that natural remedies, change of diet (eliminating allergen or "trigger" foods, preservatives, colorings, and artificial ingredients can go a long way in emotional, mental, physical changes...although...there are some persons that either do not want to change their lifestyle that dramatically or it may not completely work for them for any number of reasons.

Everyone could benefit from a healthier environment; allergists have long known that something as simple as laundry detergent, house cleaner, perfumes can set off reactions - physical, emotional and/or mental in people and animals. Then, there are some people that were just "wired" wrong when their bodies were forming, or have a hormonal imbalance. Whether it turns out to be a true "chemical imbalance" or not doesn't matter as much as getting the right help & treatment for each individual; as each person's condition (or animal's)is unique to them and ought to be approached individually. If it must include medications, then so be it. But stay on them for only as long as you must, then be done with them. But one thing is true, as far as ADD and ADHD goes, there have been no tests available so far that measure any chemical imbalance(s). So even though Cruise might be reacting too strongly, that in fact, is a true statement pertaining to those conditions just mentioned.

I agree that Cruise ought watch the lack of respect he's exhibiting as of late. He could benefit from more of a "speak softly but carry a big stick" approach. His movie may be called "War of the Worlds", but he most certainly doesn't have to try to recreate it in real life.

As far as his sexuality preference, I'm not interested in knowing one way or the other.

The Scientology thing, it's a minor thing. Who cares if Katie is interested? No one cares about all the other stars that have taken such interest in that, or Taoism, or whatever. And why care about his relationships? It's Hollywood, and they're all a bit "off" in one way or another anyhow.

Cruise is showing arrogance, disrespect, and could well benefit from "specialists" in those fields appearing with him & backing him.

I say relax, go see the movie...and pass the popcorn.

If Mr. Cruise thinks psychiatry is a ruse, he should really take a closer look at Scientology. That is TOTAL brainwashing, money grabbing, BULL. He has the money, but what about the innocents they brainwash and who can't buy their way back? I find it very difficulty to believe an intelligent person can believe what Cruise is saying. Hence: Tom Cruise is, if not totally, bordering on STUPIDITY.

as the parent of a child with ADHD, I can definitely said that my son is a better individual due to the medication. My son is not on the controversary drug Ritalin but on Adderall plus talk therapy. My son was able to finally move from self-contain classroom into a regular classroom. The medication allowed him to be more focus in his cognitive thinking while the talk therapy allowed him to understand that there are better ways of communicating his frustrations than having tantrums. Mr. Cruise is not a mental health professional. Last I looked, he's not even a high school graduate. For him to state his personal opinion as fact as it retains to the field of psychiatry is truly irresponsible. There are many people who truly need the medication and talk therapy to function normally in everday live. Would he really prefer that schizophrenias not take their medication? Would he really prefer a woman suffering from postpartum depression to not take her antidepressants? I hope he never finds himself in a situation were he needs the medication to function.

Tom Cruise is an arrogant, ignorant, misinformed, obnoxious idiot. I will NEVER spend another dime to see his crooked face on screen. The man believes in aliens, and yet he can ridicule people who have serious medical conditions and are trying to get help. I'm sure that with his money, most problems that face the average person on a daily basis are not a problem for him, but mental illness can effect anyone at any time. Excersise and diet will not help you get "over it" as his comments suggest. Perhaps if he could "get over" his homosexuality he may learn to accept that people are different and that what may work for some might not neccessarily work for everyone, and that people should not be ridiculed for their choices. This man can't even put together a coherent sentence, yet he feels the need to have an opinion about something he knows nothing about. I have a niece with ADHD. Had this child not been able to take medication, she would have remained a distracted discipline problem instead of the bright semi-well behaved 7 year old she is today (she's still a normal 7 year old!). Mr. Cruise is an actor. A truly noble profession, but certainly not one requiring a phD. Anyone who believes L. Ron Hubbard, who was a science FICTION writer, had the all the answers needs to have their head examined. Not to see if they have any psychological problems but to make sure there is any grey matter in there at all. Perhaps he should "act" like a responsible adult, stop jumping on couches and keep his mouth shut about things that are way beyond his scope of intelligence and experience. Anyone interested in starting a Tob Cruise Boycott???

The Ritalin and Adderal drugs are bad for the liver, stunt growth (they interfer with natural bodily hormones trying to buld a strong body) and there are CHILD DEATHS from heart attacks, etc. associated with both of them. Behavior modification may be what the parents are after, but they may need to take a look at their own issues first. They feed their kids crap, they smoke in the house, swear and argue, and watch stupid garbage on television. If I were a kid now, I would be acting out too! The drug companies love people like Brooke Shields. Drug companies have found a niche. they are after the kids, and your pets too! There are life-saving medications, but come on, they've gone too far. when they are on the television screen telling me to take a pill EVERY DAY just IN CASE I MIGHT get heartburn, instead of taking something (usually baking soda will work fine!)WHEN I do get it...they've gone too far. If someone is getting heartburn that regularly, there is something way more wrong! And, yes, drugs do mask or cover up symptoms. Ask anyone who was prescribed pain killers and later found out the pain was their body's way of communicating to them that there was actually something seriously wrong, but "missed" by their doctor! Wow.

Through Physhiatric Medicine we have found cures or at least help for certain illnesses.

But there is just no cure for STUPID.

I believe that Tom Cruise is totally brainwashed by his so called religion. I see the benefits in what Dianetics teaches a person. Forget the past and move on without guilt is the philosophy in a nut shell. Of course he would dislike the idea of going over the past in search of "why".
I do believe that children are over medicated and then, as a teacher I can clearly tell when a student hasn't taken their medication and they are totally unteachable. I understand and yes, know the history of many of the horrible practices at the beginning of "mental sciences", actually all sciences. Does Cruise not remember leeches, blood letting, etc. He truly needs to read things other than what other scientologists give him. I always knew he was a stranger person and this latest information just confirmed my belief.

What a dip shit he is. LOL.. God put our brains inside our skull, the hardest part of the body, obviously he did that because it just so happens that our BRAINS our very sensitive and very much a part of our lives and need protection. lol.. if I were walking down the street with my leg bleeding and cut off mr cruise would probably stop to help or call 911. But if youre walking down the street talking to yourself because of a chemical inbalance of the brain, mr cruise would probably run liked a scared little spoiled baby because he's and idiot and doesnt understand. Like MOST idiots. Thanks

i think cruise is a punk and has no respect for anyone else. he acts like a 9 year kid that thinks he knows everything. i wouldn't go to see one of his movies if they were for free

Having a son with ADD and the struggles and difficult decisions for parents, I'm insulted and frankly disgusted with his obvious lack of knowledge and ignorance for the uses of these type of drugs to treat patients. Parents of children with ADD / ADHD educate themselves on the disorder and various methods of treatment. Tom Cruise using his "hollywood" power to communicate his warped perceptions and ideas is revolting. He is very uneducated on the matter and his claim to know is ridiculous and makes him look like a complete idiot. He needs to get over himself...his self-importance is showing. He is an "actor' for crying out loud, not anything more.

He needs to get a grip on himself. Signed, a lost fan

Psychiatry is a pseudo-science? Therefore Tom Cruise is a pseudo-actor. Fanatics in their pseudo-world cannot objectively deal with the real world.

Not only has Mr. Cruise demonstrated his bull-headed ignorance, but also his lack of education and manners. I am embarrassed by his manic-like displays of late. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but Tom, really, there are more civilized ways of expression.

Thank you Tom, for reinforcing my belief that ignorance is no excuse. If you ever find yourself unable to get out of bed for months with a dark cloud of a feeling that NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE, go ahead. Eat some vegetables, do some exercise, hell - light a candle and sprinkle salt around your mansion. Whatever. Me, I'll keep taking my Pexeva and Wellbutrin. :)

Why doesn't he just shut up? No one has asked for his opinion. What is making him think that his opinion is of such value to society? I llked him before...can't stand him now.

Boy, I bet he doesn't get cast in too many more flicks after this....LOL...

Tom Cruise...black listed himself in Hollywood....Guess he figured he made enough money for a HS drop out who couldn't even READ when he started acting. Hmmmm....

Brooke Shields should take comfort in knowing that he is over in Hollywood.

Tom Cruise is just an actor.....he could not handle graduating from high school, never attended college and now wants to push his thoughts on America. For an uneducated man he is showing his true colors.......mislead and a puppet for the church of science...idiotlogy

Tom Cruise will be alright he could use an antidepressant or anti anxiety pill AND lots of psychotherpy to help him deal with his denial about himself!!

I believe Tom Cruise could benefit by seeing a psychiatrist. He is off the deep end.

Ms Shields did and is doing the right thing - she is educated and makes sound decisions. Mr Cruise on the other hand has always been a total bafoon. He speaks before thinking - The past few months with or without Katie, he has shown he has lost it - he has sold his soul and is spiraling down the road to hell

At 4:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I dont understand how Cruise can be such a narrow minded individual. I used to enjoy watching him act, but now he is not the same man I used to admire - he has lost my vote for being a sane human being. Katie - take a long hard look - you are being used and soon to be abused.

He knows jack crap about the subject and speaks his mind on any topic as if he is an authority on the subject. He is sounding more and more uneducated and is becoming hilarious - is it just to cover up the fact that he is GAY? Its OK Tom - come on out of the closet. From one who knows.

Anyone, any "man," who comments on post-partum depression as if they understand it is just a fool. Until a man pushes out a baby and then has to deal with the physical and emotional effects of caring for this new soul, vulnerable and beautiful, then cannot truly understand the horror of this chemical imbalance. I thought if I was left alone with my baby I would kill him, or I would die and he would grow up without a mother. Because I am a sane woman I realized something was wrong and I needed to see my doctor about these feelings which I knew were post-partum depression. I was put on Zoloft and am now slowly weening myself from it, I too do not believe we should keep ourselves medicated uless the medication is actually helping. My feelings have dissapated(sp). Mr. Cruise cannot understand that horrible abyss womemn can find themselves in: to think that we could actually harm that small being who we're suppose to love and nurture. He will never understand this horror, and that is the only word I can come up with for post-partum depression. It is utter, unimaginable, torturous, horror. And if a drug helps me get rid of that feeling and allows me to be a mom to my son then I say, "bring it on." Mr. Cruise, until you know this personally, in your soul, please, keep your thoughts to yourself, at least don't spill this poison on TV. Your words are the drugs that are toxic to the millions of women who suffer from the "baby blues."

Anybody remember when that turkey Vanilla Sky came out & his "soulmate" was Penelope Cruz? That lasted until the movie DIED at the boxoffice. Anybody who belives Katie Holmes is his soulmate-I got some beachfront property in Arizona available for sale.Concerning the REMAKE of the George Pal classic War of the Worlds--are there NO original ideas in Hollywood at all that you have to murder a sci-fi classic-especially with an asshole like Tom Cruise in the lead! Shame on you,Steven Spielberg formaking us suffer through ANOTHER Tom Cruise turkey(like Minority Report).

If I had to put up with an idiot like cruise(doesnt deserve to have a capital "C")24/7, I'd have killed that S.O.B a LONG time ago & gotten off by pleading insanity!

As far as I am concerned Mr. Cruise you have a young daughter and I hope to god (yes god) that she never experiences post partum depression because she will never get the support she will need from her family. You should be ashamed of yourself making judgements on other people when you have your own secrets in life to hide. I am done because I can honestly say I can never watch one of your movies again and not think about what you said. I am very sad for you because you are a little man with a little mind.

In my opinion, Mr. Cruise's statements made him look like an arrogant, close minded idiot. I found it furthermore appauling that he would have the gaul to openly judge Brooke Shields on how she coped with post-partum depression. Tom's lack of knowledge on the subjects he commented on show him to be an uneducated, prideful prick who obviously feels so highly of himself he thinks everyone else needs to know his view and opinion on things. Instead of promoting his new movie on The Today Show, he showed America just how ignorant he really is. Best of luck to you Katie Holmes....in dealing with someone that has that big of an ego!!

I will give Tom Cruise his wonderful acting ability. I will give him his good looks. In fact, I will give him his right as an American to believe whatever the Hell he wants........But as a medical care giver and more importantly, the wife and mother of bipolars, I see in him a person who should carry the diagnosis of bipolar disorder..manic phase; with grandiosity. Who the Hell cares about his beliefs/sexual preferences/self-professed medical accumen, (which I'm certain I could fit into a thimble!!)...but Tom and Hollywood? He lacks the empathy required for a wholesome life. I would not wish him or his "offspring" anything negative, but we all know that adopted children are often ADD with bipolar propensity (hence the unplanned offspring secondary to hypersexuality), so he may just have to eat his words. Anyone who is hyperverbal/loquacious with multiple marriages and so bloody arrogant is in question re: the diagnosis of Bipolar...Sounds like he was a loose cannon on Oprah (can you imagine YOUR father jumping on a couch like that??).....The only things which I know will cause this type of behavior are street drugs (which I think we can rule-out), the "other"(medically warranted) steroids which can cause mania, and the "high"/grandiosity that Kay Jamison so appropriately refers to in her books as "manic high" ....Tom, you do a fine job researching your characters and in fact, acting out your characters; there is no question that you are bright, talented and articulate; but your personal decisions and your personal beliefs are truly in question...You likely need a taste of lithium...and ps, please keep your damned psychiatric expertise to your damn self!!!! You know not of what you speak.......

To everyone who believes that people can solve their own psychological problems, parents use ADHD medication to compensate for their own poor behavior, etc:

Those who believe that people can "fix" their own brains have simply never encountered a problem so great they could not fix. Think of it this way: Mary was feeling extremely sad one day for little reason. But she was able to pull herself out of the funk by forcing herself to take a walk, listen to music, or talk to a friend. Bob, on the other hand, was also feeling extremely sad that day. He was not able to pull himself out the funk.

Could it be that Bob wasn't "weaker" than Mary, but that his "sadness" was more profound and serious?

ADHD and ADD are real disorders. It is true that many people are misdiagnosed, but this does not mean that the actual disorders are less real or severe. Claiming that Ritalin/Aderall has been harmful has no effect on the truth of their helpfulness. Drugs can be abused. Some drugs have unpredictable side effects. But psychiatry is still real, and the drugs used to help psychiatric patients are real and useful.

And to the person who referenced the advertisements for heartburn medication: It is more than likely that only those who experience severe, life-disrupting heart-burn several times a week (i.e., those who "need" the medicine) are those who receive it. As I tried to make clear earlier, a treatment is likely in response to the condition's severity, and not the weakness or gullibility of the person.

"Psychiatry is a pseudoscience..." Right. Unlike Scientology which has SCIENCE right in the name!!
"There's no such thing as a chemical imbalance..." Then what the HELL do you call what Mr. Cruise is experiencing right now?!? It's called HYPOMANIA...look into it. Perhaps a little Lithium might help. Irresponsible, uneducated, dumbass high school dropout. www.freekatie.net

You hit the nail on the head!

Actors giving advice. Unless you went through it like Brooke and so many others, including myself, you couldn't understand the subject.

Tom Cruise is a closet homosexual hiding behind a recently made up religion called scientology. Did they cure his homosexuality?
That's a joke. Nothing against homosexuals.

Your job is to act. Now act puppet!
We don't care what you think!

Too bad so many good actors have the most anti-American, F****d up opinions. Must be in the Hollywood Water.

Hey Tom
Your comments are like saying there is no such thing as dyslexia...isn't that why you had to drop out of high school? Remember that Brooke Shields is an honors graduate from Princeton...slightly better than your New Jersey public school eighth grade education.

Arlington, sportsbook Va The American Psychiatric Association (APA) released the following statement in response to Tom Cruise's anti-psychiatry remarks:
While the APA respects the right of individuals to express their own points of view, science has proven that bet nfl mental illnesses are real medical conditions that affect millions of Americans.
"It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need," said APA President Dr. sportsbook Steven S. Sharfstein.
Over the past five years, the nation has more than doubled its investment in the study of the human brain and behavior, leading to a vastly expanded understanding of postpartum depression, bipolar disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Much of this research has been conducted by the http://www.enterbet.com National Institutes of Health and the nation's leading academic institutions. Safe and effective treatments are available and may include talk therapy, medication or a combination of the two. Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment works.
